Chronometer A chronometer is a small, portable precision clock capable of working at sea on a ship and of being used to determine a ship’s longitude. The term was coined by Jeremy Thacker in 1714 and is also used to describe marine chronometers. Today, a chronometer is a type of Swiss watch that has been tested and certified to meet certain precision standards.
