Ebonising Ebonising is a finishing process used to darken wood while allowing its grain to show through the finish. Light-coloured woods (fruitwood or pine, for example) subjected to ebonising take on a rich, dark colour, thus mimicking the appearance of ebony, a dense black-brown hardwood widely found across tropical regions, especially in Asia and Africa. This process was used on the cases of many early clocks and is still employed today for pianos and fine furniture.
