Ebonising Ebonising is a finishing process for darkening wood that allows for the grain of the wood to show through the finish. By doing so, the wood (fruitwood or pine for example) will take on a black ebony colour, thus mimicking the appearance of ebony wood, a dense black/brown hardwood widely found across tropical regions, especially in Asia and Africa. This process was used on the cases of many early clocks and is still used today for pianos and fine furniture.
