Escutcheon An escutcheon is a flat piece of metal that is made to fit around a keyhole. Pretty and sometimes rather ornate gilt and silvered metal escutcheons were typically used for ornamentation on early clock cases. Those that appeared on clock cases by Joseph Knibb were so distinctive that they became known as Knibb escutcheons.
