At 7:15, it strikes once for the quarter and then seven times for the hour. At 7:30, it strikes twice for the quarter and then seven times for the hour. At 7:45, it strikes three times for the quarter and then seven times for the hour. The clock owner could know the time every fifteen minutes just by listening to the striking of their clock. Grande sonnerie was an innovation in complications.
