Gravity escapement Invented by Edmund Beckett Denison (1st Lord Grimthorpe), the gravity escapement is a type of escapement considered to be ideal for a tower clock. It uses a small weight or a weak spring to transfer an impulse directly to the pendulum and was used in ‘Big Ben’ in Elizabeth Tower, London, and the clock of Trinity College, Cambridge.
