Interregnum Interregnum is the period when the normal government is suspended, especially between successive reigns or regimes. In British history, the Interregnum refers to the period of republican rule in Britain when the government was led by Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector of the Commonwealth, after the execution of King Charles I in January 1649 and before the Restoration of the Stuart monarchy marked by the return from exile of King Charles II in 1660.
