Lunar time (or moon time) Lunar time (or moon time) is the period of time it takes the earth’s moon to complete one rotation on its axis with respect to the sun. This is a lunar day. On average, a lunar day lasts 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 3 seconds, which is roughly the length of a month on Earth. Each lunar day is divided into 30 cycles of time, with each cycle being divided into 24 moon-hours. Each moon-hour then has 60 moon-minutes, which comprise 60 moon-seconds each. The lunar year comprises twelve lunar days, now named after the first men who walked on the moon. Lunar time is also known as lunar standard time (or ‘LST’).
