Redemption Redemption literally means freedom from blame or debt. In a horological context, clockmakers who were not members of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers could easily find themselves in the crosshairs of the guild if they were spotted making clocks in London. If discovered, they were then compelled to become members of the Company by redemption, which was achieved by paying a fine to make up for their offences and facilitate membership. Once the fine was paid, there were various levels of membership to choose from, each of which cost the clockmaker more money in dues and time.
