Spandrel On early clock cases, a spandrel is a decorative element appearing in the four corners of the dial face of a clock. Usually, the spandrel is cast in gilt brass or silver. Sometimes, spandrels are engraved. Typically (but not always), the spandrel is a cast winged cherub’s head. In architecture, a spandrel is the space between two arches or between an arch and a rectangular enclosure.
