Volvelle Volvelles (sometimes spelled 'vovelles’) are concentric paper or parchment circles that were used in Medieval Europe to calculate the phases of the sun and moon. They are a paper-based derivation of the metal astrolabe.The word ‘volvelle’ comes from the Latin verb volvere, meaning ‘to turn’. The moving parts of a volvelle are sometimes referred to as rundells.
