Harrison's Brocklesby Clock Curator Dr Kristin Leith has also added a new article about the iconic Brocklesby Clock, c1722, which is still going strong on the eponymous country estate in Lincolnshire. Dr Taylor has a replica Brocklesby, made by the specialist clockmaker Andrew King, who crafted the clock’s case using oak felled from the park around Brocklesby Hall. Andrew King told Clocktime News, “There’s no other clock like it in the world. Most turret clocks are huge, yet this one is compact. It was the first time we saw John Harrison do experimental work with pendulums. Also, it was the first clock he made that required no extra lubrication. All the bushes are lignum vitae, and the pivots are brass, so they don’t wear. It’s the world’s first complex lubrication-free mechanism. It’s the basis of all of Harrison’s future work. Everything started with the Brocklesby turret clock!”
