New Exhibit - Samuel Knibb Cupola Clock It is thought Knibb consulted the English architect John Webb for this clock’s case design. The spectacular cupola table clock was produced by a clockmaker about whom we know very little. Samuel Knibb (c1625 - c1670) was the son of a yeoman of Claydon, Oxfordshire, called John Knibb. Nobody has been able to find where Samuel was apprenticed but he was admitted to the Clockmakers’ Company in 1663. Only five Samuel Knibb clocks are known. All are of the finest quality. There is another very similar cupola clock made by Ahasuerus Fromanteel in a slightly smaller case. This clock was made to be admired on all four sides. It has custom-designed movement plates with integrated extensions for the bells, which fit up into the cupola.
