New Exhibit - Knibb Walnut Parquetry-Marquetry Longcase This clock runs for 32 days straight. Knibb gave the owner an extra day to wind the month-going clock. Who said you cannot buy time? It is rare to find a 350-year-old clock in virtually original condition but this Joseph Knibb month-going parquetry longcase is just that. It is a fine example of Knibb’s Oxford work, particularly the detailing in the hands, the Oxford shapes, all subtly different to Joseph’s production in London. The black ebony clock cases, coming from the Cromwellian and Puritan view of the world, had slowly given way with the introduction of walnut and olivewood veneers as the restored Stuart monarchy of Charles II tried to move on from the past. Now was the time to introduce something new again – a parquetry and floral panelled case. Funnily enough, marketing has changed little in 350 years. In every age it is necessary to move the market forward – the veneering on the case was a new look to do just that!
