Bain invents the electric clock In 1840, Alexander Bain, a Scottish clock and instrument maker, invented and patented the electric clock. Using electricity to power the clock (as opposed to a hanging weight or a spring like that in a traditional mechanical clock), Bain’s electric clock was driven by a spring and pendulum, and employed an electrical impulse to operate a number of dials.
