Earliest dated British clock Over 400 years old, the signed lantern clock by clockmaker William Bowyer is the earliest known dated British clock (coming soon to Clocktime). The signature, on the base of the dial, reads William Bowyer fecit 1617. This clock is associated with the 'First Period' of lantern clockmaking, from around 1620–1640.[1] Such clocks are characterised by a boldness of design not found in the later century, and Bowyer’s clocks personify this with their intricate and highly individual detailing.
