England's first mechanical clock The Salisbury Cathedral clock is probably the oldest mechanical clock in the world and is certainly the oldest one in England. Originally made in 1386, it was probably designed and constructed by Dutch horologists. It is a turret clock and typical of the first mechanical clocks to appear in Europe during the late medieval period. It has no dial, no hands, and no pendulum. It indicated the passage of time to the whole surrounding community by means of the striking of bells every hour.
