Their maker’s voice - Carter Marsh & Co The historical city of Winchester, Hampshire is the home to Carter Marsh & Co, which has a busy showroom and a highly industrious workshop. Headed up by Darrell Dipper, the core focus of the business is antique clocks, plus more recently, vintage and modern watches. As clockmaking is on the Red List of Endangered Crafts, it’s heartwarming to know that craftsmanship is highly valued by the timekeeping specialists and their customers. Darrell said, “We are extremely fortunate to have our own dedicated apprentice-served team based on site. They’ve been privileged to work on some of the world’s finest and rarest clocks and watches. We offer a complete conservation and restoration service, from a routine overhaul to full restoration.” Interestingly, cabinet restoration is managed separately to the clock conservation for the obvious reason of dust! The extensive Carter Marsh & Co technical team includes Roger Still, former head of Asprey, London workshops and a tutor at West Dean College. Gordon Bird is a friend to many of their longest supporting customers with over 45 years’ experience. Also, Jonathan Kelly is a clock conservation specialist and a graduate from West Dean College, Sussex. The business is just one of 15 named by The British Horological Institute as an accredited repairer of watches, clocks and turret clocks. Interestingly, the company is also a publisher of seven catalogues and three books, noted for their academic documentation of early British clocks, watches and other timekeepers. If you’re lucky enough to be near Winchester, do pop in and say hello to the team. They are just round the corner from Winchester Cathedral, so you will be in good company.
