Crown wheel The crown wheel is a gearwheel shaped like a crown. It is part of the verge escapement (also known as the crown-wheel escapement), which allows the gear train to advance at regular intervals, or ‘ticks’. This mechanism is driven by a weight and repeatedly checked by the action of a pair of metal pallets that alternatively stop its successive teeth.
