Crutch In horology, the crutch is the wire fixed to the backplate of the movement in a clock, usually bent at a right angle at the bottom, with a rectangular hole in it for the pendulum rod to slide through. The crutch creates the relationship between the swinging pendulum and the pallet arbor of the escapement.
