Wright creates the pocket chronometer Around 1783, instrument maker Thomas Wright manufactured the earliest known pocket chronometer. It was created between 1780 and 1809, during the heated design contest between Thomas Earnshaw and John Arnold and their race for recognition of the invention of the spring-detent escapement.
