Recoil In horology, recoil is the action of an escapement whereby each of the pallets, after catching the escape wheel tooth, drives the escapement and the whole gear train backwards. Recoil can be observed on clocks with an anchor escapement when the seconds hand moves forwards with each ‘tick’ and then moves slightly backwards before proceeding to the next ‘tick’.
