Graham perfects the anchor escapement Around 1700, clockmaker George Graham perfected the anchor escapement design by modifying the arm of each steel pallet so that the lower portion of each limb was based on the arc of a circle with its centre at the axis of rotation of the pallets. Graham's refined version became the gold standard of escapements and was used in all pendulum clocks going forward.
