Dead-beat escapement The dead-beat escapement is a type of escapement in which the pallets bring the train to a dead stop, thus eliminating backward recoil (backward recoil occurs with almost all other escapements, such as the anchor escapement). This keeps the pendulum swing more consistent. The dead-beat escapement was used for all regulator clocks after George Graham perfected this type of mechanism.
