Grasshopper escapement The grasshopper escapement is a type of escapement invented around 1720 by John Harrison, who used it in his regulator clocks, including his ground breaking Wooden Regulator, dated 1726. This type of escapement is used for pendulum clocks and has pivoting pallets and low friction (as opposed to the sliding friction characteristic of anchor and dead-beat escapements). It is named as such because the movement of the pallets resembles a grasshopper walking on top of the escape wheel.
